Branding Is Bull$shit And Other Things Mark Cuban Told Me To Tell You
by Kalika Yap
This week I was at an amazing EO (Entrepreneurs’ Organization) LA event with over 400 members and guests from 19 chapters.
The energy was electrifying.
Being around that many entrepreneurs who are building, hustling, creating, and solving real problems does something to you.
And the highlight? Getting to hear from Mark Cuban, and then finding myself nodding along to nearly everything he said about what actually matters in business.
I want to share what resonated with me most, because I think it’s going to shift how you show up as an entrepreneur.
Mark Cuban
Mark started MicroSolutions in his 20s, bootstrapped a systems integration company that solved real problems.
Then Broadcast.com.
When it was sold to AOL, 300 of his employees became millionaires.
Now he owns the Dallas Mavericks and invests in companies that actually matter.
Mark doesn’t care about vanity metrics or corporate theater.
He cares about solving problems and building trust.
That’s it.
Branding Is Bull$hit
Brands aren’t built by what you say about yourself.
They’re built by what your customers and stakeholders say about you.
“You want to drive me crazy? Hand me swag. I don’t mind if you buy t-shirts with your company name on it for your employees. But if you give me a branded bag, I’m like, you’re not investing in building a business. You’re wasting money trying to convince me you’re important.”
— Mark Cuban
That’s exactly what happened with Citrus Studios back in 1999.
I had a terrible brand. Black and yellow. The word “citrus” hidden in a citrus slice. (How obvious) Ugh
But my goal was never a beautiful logo.
It was bringing in clients and solving their problems.
The brand built itself from what clients said about us, not from what I said about us.
In fact, over my 27 years in business, I’ve changed my brand identity three times.
Each time, it wasn’t because I decided to rebrand.
It was because my clients and customers told me who I was.
As branding expert Marty Neumeier says, “Your brand is not what you say it is. It’s what other people say it is.”
I learned that lesson early. Even as a 20-something entrepreneur with zero branding budget and less business expertise, I knew one thing:
business always came before branding.
Every single time.
“You can spend all your time on branding and corporate gifting, or you can build a business that your customers want to talk about. The second one wins every single time.”
— Mark Cuban
The Real Business You’re In
You have to know what business you’re actually in.
Not what you think you’re in.
Cost Plus Drugs launched January 22.
They’re not selling medications.
They’re selling transparency and trust.
They show the actual cost of drugs and mark them up 15 percent.
Industry standard? Way higher.
A friend of Mark’s couldn’t afford Trotropic medication. Insurance was $10,000 every three months.
With Cost Plus Drugs, it’s $63 a month.
Same medication.
The difference is transparency.
“The formula for trust is transparency divided by self-interest.”
— Mark Cuban
That’s your real business, whatever you’re selling.
Earning trust from your customers.
Everything else is just the vehicle.
Take Citrus Studios.
On the surface, we’re a branding and design studio. But that’s not the business we’re actually in.
The business we’re in is Clarity and Confidence.
We help entrepreneurs get clear on who they are so they can sell to their customers with confidence.
The logos, the design, the strategy? That’s the vehicle.
Clarity and confidence are what we actually deliver.
All In With AI
Being all in with AI isn’t optional anymore.
AI is hard. Microsoft had to hire 6,000 forward-deployed engineers just to figure it out.
But here’s what Mark said that I’m keeping close:
“For small companies and entrepreneurs, AI is a superpower. You’re more agile. You can learn it faster. You can implement it faster.”
— Mark Cuban
Mark uses Claude as his favorite tool because he can literally have a conversation with it.
He said:
“I just say, I don’t even have a high school diploma. I want to learn the basics of business. Put together a study guide. And then modify it based on my answers so I get smarter at my own pace.”
— Mark Cuban
That’s how you use AI as a small business owner.
Not to replace your thinking.
To augment it.
To move faster than the big companies stuck in bureaucracy.
Mark had a different approach with Bitcoin. He bought it as a hedge, protection against geopolitical instability and the declining value of the dollar.
But when his thesis didn’t play out the way he predicted, he sold 80% of his holdings.
This is where Mark’s philosophy becomes clear:
“If my thesis holds, I stay in stock even if the price goes against me. If my thesis is wrong, for whatever reason, they got it wrong, I’m out.”
— Mark Cuban
His Bitcoin thesis? It was wrong. So he moved on.
But his AI thesis? That one’s working and proving itself every single day.
I didn’t get into Bitcoin. Something about it never made sense to me.
But I’m completely sold on AI.
Small entrepreneurs leaning into this right now are going to be leading in five years.
Do This Before Monday
“If you wake up tomorrow, hopefully you will, you need one thing before the next Monday. Go work out.”
— Mark Cuban
If you’re not healthy, you can’t perform your best.
Your mind isn’t sharp.
You’re reactive instead of proactive.
As Mark put it: “As you get older, it matters even more.”
I’ve seen it in my own life.
When I’m working out, I make better decisions.
I think more clearly.
When I skip it, everything feels harder.
Before Monday, move your body.
Get outside.
Work out.
Clear your head.
You’ll show up as a better entrepreneur.
Healthcare Benefits and Transparency
Most entrepreneurs have no idea what they’re actually paying for healthcare benefits.
The system is broken because Pharmacy Benefit Managers sit in the middle and extract value without adding anything.
Go to business.costplus.com.
Look at the actual costs and markups on 40 drugs.
Then ask yourself:
Are you being transparent with your employees about what their healthcare costs?
Most companies aren’t. Most CEOs don’t even know.
Mark gave the whole room a task, and I’m passing it straight to you:
Go home. Take a PDF of your benefits, medical and pharmacy, and run it through Claude.
Then ask one question: “Where am I being ripped off?”
Then follow up with: “What can I do next to solve this?”
Here’s what Mark said about it:
“That will give you better information than any consultant or broker you could hire.”
— Mark Cuban
Every penny you save on healthcare goes straight to your bottom line.
For most entrepreneurs, this is the lowest-hanging way to create real cash in your business.
You just have to look.
Build a company where people trust you. Show them the real numbers.
Be honest about what things cost. That’s when the magic happens.
Your Step-by-Step Guide: Building a Business That Matters
Step 1: Identify Your Real Business
What problem are you actually solving?
Not the surface answer. The real one.
Are you selling a product or trust?
Are you offering a service or building a community?
Get clear.
Write it down.
Make every decision align with that truth.
Step 2: Audit Your Brand Story
Stop asking “What should people think about my brand?”
Start asking “What are my customers actually saying about me?”
Ask five of your best customers what they’d tell a friend about working with you.
Write down their exact words.
That’s your real brand.
Step 3: Make One Decision About AI This Week
Pick one way you’re going to use AI to get smarter or move faster.
One. Not everything at once.
Using Claude to learn something?
Using AI to automate a task that’s eating your time?
Pick it.
Do it.
Report back on Friday about what you learned.
Step 4: Move Your Body Before Monday
Non-negotiable.
Go for a walk.
Do a workout.
Get outside.
Show up on Monday as a sharper, calmer version of yourself.
Step 5: Have a Transparency Conversation
If you have a team, pick one area where you can be more transparent.
Your financials.
Your challenges.
How decisions get made.
Start the conversation.
Watch what happens when you build trust through honesty.
Ready to Build Your Real Business?
The entrepreneurs who win aren’t the ones with the fanciest logos.
They’re the ones solving real problems.
They’re the ones building trust.
They’re the ones showing up fully.
If you’re ready to clarify your mission and stop wasting time on vanity branding, let’s talk.
No pitch. Just real conversation about what you’re building.
