Do you loaf?

Are you a lollygagger?

Would you like to transform from being a sloth to a super-achiever?

Or are you one of those insanely productive people — that irritate everyone around you with your over-the-top driven behavior?

Would it be okay with you, if life got just a little bit easier?

The two archetypes are me all in one. I swing from super sloth to super achiever several times a week.

It’s been a long road from laziness to luminous living — here are share my tips on how I got there.

Busy or Productive?

We see a lot of people running around.

Checking things off from their to-do list.

Half of them are what I call Busy and the other half Productive.

Let’s take a look at the difference:

Busy people
Complain that there isn’t enough time

Productive people
Make time for their top priorities

Busy people
Multitask, make mistakes, and have to do things over and over again

Productive people
Focus on one task at a time

Busy people
Worry about too many details

Productive people
Silence their inner perfectionist

Busy people
Take on too many of the wrong responsibilities

Productive people
Know when to delegate

Busy people
Fully pack in their schedules without time to recharge and reflect

Productive people
Make room for reflection and planning

Busy people
Feel easily burnt out

Last but most importantly, productive people maintain high energy levels

I believe the most productive and happy people on this planet, harness that force.

That force is energy.

Energy, not time is the currency of productivity and high performance.

I first learned about energy in my early 20s when I picked up a book by Dr. Maria Nemeth.

She wrote two books that were very influential in my life called The Energy of Money, and Mastering Life’s Energies.

There are six types of energy and they are all interconnected.

They are:

  • Time
  • Money
  • Physical Vitality
  • Relationships
  • Creativity & Enjoyment

How do we know these are energy?

Look at the words we use.

When we speak of using energy well, we talk about spending it, investing it.

When we describe the poor use of energy, we speak of wasting it, losing it, or squandering it.

Each and every one of us has a different relationship with these six forms of energy.

How do we harness this energy so it leads to a successful and productive life?

The first step is to understand that life is a game.

And that it’s a game worth playing.

Life is a series of games, and a well-lived life consists of creating personal games that are worth playing because they involve goals that mean a great deal to us.

Games allow us to clarify our goals, learn new skills, cultivate our talents, and focus our energies.

Whether it’s to start a catering business or write a book of poetry, or volunteer for the peace corp, whatever it is, you will see that these goals ask you to stretch, develop skills, and engage with life in new ways.

Engagement, dancing with your dreams, and productivity go hand in hand.

Think about it.

Haven’t you felt your best when you’re so involved with a project or activity that means a lot to you?

It could be as large and visible as starting an arts center for Asian Pacific Islander youth, or as small/invisible project of caring of one child. . .

In reality, none of these goals are small if it’s about expressing yourself and bringing what was inside you into the light.

You choose these games and they reflect who you are in a profound, personal and meaningful way.

These goals and projects focus your energies and cut your doubts and fears down to size.

In a very real way, you’re shaped by the game.

How do you shape the game?

#1 Know Who You Are:
When you know who you are
what you want to do and why it matters — it’s very easy to free up your time to focus on what you want to do.

Define what success looks like for yourself.

Success according to Dr. Nemeth is doing what you say you’re going to do consistently with clarity, focus, ease, and grace.

Success, seen this way, is an inside job. You don’t compare yourself to anyone else. You don’t even look at whether what you’re doing is big or small. You look instead at the quality of your action and of your experience.

People who are successful are willing to do what they don’t want to do.
They are willing to do what they are afraid of doing. They are also willing to do what they don’t know how to do.

When you decide how you want to show up to your life, it’s easier to make decisions that keep you on your path.

#2 Set up habits & systems
I use tools and systems to help me manage myself, my business, and my home. For example, I use trackers,
I use the Entrepreneurial Operating System for my business.

When I know what needs to be done I can implement a process which makes life so much easier.

Some of the tools I use include:

1. Meditation – it’s a keystone habit that leads to better habits.If I meditate, I sleep better, when I sleep better, I make better decisions

2. The Green Lens – This is another fantastic tool I learned from Dr. Nemeth. It’s a tool that helps me focus my energy because I’m looking at the person I am collaborating with as a hero, whole and complete, a person that deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

3. Gratitude Protocol Writing in my journal twice a day (morning and evening) and feeling the gratefulness is key. My favorite journal is the 5 Minute Journal and Productivity Sheets by Intelligent Change

And the last tool I want to share:

4. The Forgiveness Protocol Letting go of the energy of anger and hurt through a forgiveness meditation (again something I learned from Dr. Maria Nemeth) is an important tool to keep you in the game and a luminous life.

In summary, how do you become productive?

1. Know the difference between being productive and busy

2. Understand that life is a game and set up goals and projects that make you buzz with excitement

3. Know yourself, what you like, what you want, how you want to make a difference in the world

4. Maintain keystone habits and tools that can keep you in the game like how not to hold grudges.
